    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to measure of technical efficiency, transport manufacturing industry in Malaysia score using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) from 2005 to 2010. The efficiency score analysis used only two inputs, i.e., capital and labor and one output i.e., total of sales. The results shown that the average efficiency score of the Banker, Charnes, Cooper - Variable Returns to Scale (BCC-VRS) model is higher than the Charnes, Cooper, Rhodes - Constant Return to Scale (CCR-CRS) model. Based on the BCC-VRS model, the average efficiency score was at a moderate level and only four sub-industry that recorded an average efficiency score more than 0.50 percent during the period study. The implication of this result suggests that the transport manufacturing industry needs to increase investment, especially in human capital such as employee training, increase communication expenses such as ICT and carry out joint ventures as well as research and development activities to enhance industry efficiency

Technical efficiency in transport manufacturing firms: evidence from Malaysia

    Get PDF
This study aims to identify the level of technical efficiency and the determinants of technical inefficiency for transport manufacturing firms in Malaysia for 2010 using cross-sectional data of 130 firms acquired from the Department of Statistics (DOS). Based on the stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) approach, the results of the study reveal that the average level of technical efficiency is moderate. The estimated result identifies the important determinants of technical inefficiency which are due to employee wage rates as well as the cost of information and communication technology. The fundamental implications of this study are that transport manufacturing firms need to boost motivation among employees and strengthen the network of the production market via wage increment and communication cost

Technical Efficiency of Malaysian Furniture Manufacturing Industry: A Stochastic Frontier Analysis Approach

Global competition has been a major issue in furniture manufacturing industry. The wooden furniture is forced to improve their productivity in terms of price and design as it is becoming the sources of competitive advantage in the industry. Most of the previous studies do not take into account in assessing the technical inefficiency factors in order to improvise firm’s efficiency. The objective of this research is to measure the technical efficiency (TE) level in furniture manufacturing industry in Malaysia besides analyzing the technical inefficiency factors to improve the firm’s efficiency. Data in the firm levels which were obtained from Department of Statistics (DOS) and will be analyzed by using Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). The study has used cross-sectional data of 710 firms acquired from DOS. The results of the study reveal that the average level of technical efficiency is high. The estimated result identifies the important determinants of technical inefficiency which are due to employee wage rates. The fundamental implication of this study is that furniture manufacturing firms need to boost motivation among employees and strengthen the network of the production market via wage increment

Measuring inefficiency in the rubber manufacturing industry

    Get PDF
Malaysia is the fifth largest producer of natural rubber in the world after Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and China as well as producing rubber products exported to more than 190 countries worldwide. However, the slowdown in growth of major importers such as China, the European Union and the United States and the perception of stock surplus as output exceeds demand led to fluctuating rubber production performance over the period 2010 to 2016. Hence, this article aims at examining the level of technical efficiency (TE) and to analyze the determinants of the inefficiencies of the rubber manufacturing industry. The analysis was conducted using the latest 145 firms’ data obtained from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOS) and using the Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) method. The results showed that the overall TE level was high while the determinants such as the capital-labor ratio, wage rate and firm size had a negative and significant impact that could reduce industrial technical efficiencies. The policy implication is that the rubber manufacturing industry needs to focus on high technological production investment, increase employee motivation through wage increment and create more strategic cooperation with international industry

Determinants Factor of Technical Efficiency in Machinery Manufacturing Industry in Malaysia

Machinery manufacturing industry has been introduced since the beginning of the industrial era from European countries and developed until today. However, major challenges in machinery industry still driven by traditional production factors such as capital and labour that caused the industry still left out. Thus, the objective of the study are to analyse the level of TE and identifying determinant factors influenced to technical efficiency in the machinery manufacturing industry in Malaysia. The study was conducted by using the method of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) two stages. The first stage involves the calculation a score of efficiency through the DEA by using firm’s data while the second stage Regression Tobit Analysis used to identify significant factors influencing to technical efficiency in machinery industrial. This firm’s data are categorized into 3 sub-industry 3-digit according to the Malaysian Standard Industrial Classifications which are consists of Manufacture Of General Purpose Machinery, Manufacture Of Special Purpose Machinery and Manufacture Of Installation Machinery Industrial And Equipment. A total of 636 machinery industry firms were involved in this study. Results showed the average efficiency score is at the medium level while the determinant factors were significant are wage rates, the standard of education and research and development (RD). The implications of this study shows that the machinery industry should focus their attention to the significant factors to improve the level of technical efficiency of the machinery industry

Information Security Culture Concept towards Information Security Compliance: A Comparison between IT and Non-IT Professionals

This paper examines the factors determining a positive Information Security Culture (ISC) concept and the influence of ISC towards ISP compliance intention (INT) between IT and non-IT professionals in Malaysian public universities. Partial least square structural equation modelling, using PLS MGA, is used to assess the measurement and structural models, and to compare the results between the two groups. Results indicate all factors have significant contribution towards ISC in both groups, with two out of seven ISC factors have significant differences. This study has revealed that although both groups have the same ISC factors, IT and non-IT professionals have significant difference in terms of believe that Top Management Commitment and Information Security Knowledge are required for implementing a positive ISC. In addition, there is a significant difference between these two groups in terms of the influence of ISC towards ISP compliance intention. ISC has less influence towards INT for Non-IT professionals compared to IT professionals within the same ISC. These empirical findings would benefit in formulating better security strategies by providing appropriate efforts for different groups of employees in the organizations. This study also provides a total cyber security solution for improving information security culture and employees’ compliance towards Information Security Policy

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to measure the level of technical efficiency (TE) and to analyse the factors of technical inefficiency of electrical and electronic manufacturing industry in Malaysia in 2015. The determinants studied include capital-labour ratio, education level ratio, firm size, information technology, and communication expenses, training expenditure, wage rates, and research and development expenditure. This study uses data on 531 firms based on the latest census of 2015 obtained from the Department of Statistics, Malaysia using the Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) approach. Based on the results, the firm’s overall TE level is high at 0.836. For the determinants of TE, it was found that firm size can reduce the inefficiencies of firm, while capital-labour ratios shows a positive relationship with technical inefficiencies in firms. The policy implication is that the electrical and electronic manufacturing industry needs to focus on scale economic achievement and high technology production in line with the competency level of employee and create more international industry technical cooperation
